Waikato Rugby Union - Positive Vibes Only

Positive Vibes Only – Setting the Standard for Community Rugby

In 2025, Waikato Rugby is proud to roll out Positive Vibes Only across all junior and youth grades, in partnership with Sport Waikato and supported by Tuatahi First Fibre.

This initiative is built on a simple idea: when we create positive environments, we create better experiences for players, coaches, referees, volunteers and whānau. We know the main reasons young people play sport are to have fun, be with their mates, and develop new skills. Positive Vibes Only is about protecting that experience and making sure rugby stays something they love and want to keep coming back to.

So what does it actually mean? It means we’re raising the bar on sideline behaviour. We’re encouraging everyone involved to lead with positivity, to back our referees, support all players, celebrate effort and teamwork, and respect the people who make game day possible.

You’ll start to see pink PVO vests worn by team managers and associate referees, signage at club venues, supporter shout-outs, and fun ways for clubs to bring energy and connection to the sideline.

This isn’t about telling people off, it’s about shifting the culture so our kids can enjoy rugby without pressure, judgement or negativity. It’s also a way to support the many volunteers who give their time every week to keep the game running.

How you can get involved:

  • Wear pink on game day to show your support

  • Cheer for both teams

  • Let the coach do the coaching

  • Thank referees and volunteers

  • Keep it kind, constructive and fun

We’re asking clubs, parents and communities across the region to get behind this kaupapa and help lead the change. Together, we can build a better rugby experience one that keeps our tamariki and rangatahi in the game for years to come.

Back the vibe. Wear the pink. Lead the change.
