Waikato Rugby Union is formed after lengthy negotiations between sub-unions.
The inaugural representative side of the new union draws its first match away to Taranaki, 15-all.
The first win comes in the third match - a 6-0 victory over Manawatu.
The first home match is a 28-11 loss to New South Wales at Claudelands Showgrounds.
There is also a brave effort against the mighty Springboks at Claudelands, losing 6-0.

Rugby Park is opened with a new 60 foot long stand.

New colours of red, yellow and black are adopted. They are a combination of the club jerseys of Hamilton (gold and black) and Old Boys (red and black), and replace the previous black and white, blue and white colours.
