Waikato Rugby Union - Coaching

Welcome to Waikato Rugby Coaching

Coaches are the backbone of our game. The time you give, the skills you share, and the environment you create makes all the difference for players of every age and ability. Waikato Rugby is proud to have you on board, and we're always looking for more good people to step up and lead. Coaching is one of the most rewarding ways to give back to your club and your community.

The 2026 season is just around the corner and clubs across the region are looking for coaches at all levels - from juniors through to senior men's and women's grades. Get in touch with your local club to find out where you're needed most this season, or complete the form below and we will help you find a club.

RugbySmart 2026 - Required for All Coaches

All coaches working with U14 grade and above must complete an in-person RugbySmart course before the season gets underway. This includes assistant coaches, position-specific coaches, and technical assistants.

RugbySmart gives coaches the knowledge and tools to deliver safe, effective techniques that keep players on the field longer and enjoying the game. Since its introduction in 2000, serious spinal injuries in rugby have dropped from an average of 9 over a five-year period to fewer than 3. That progress is something we're all part of.

Courses are run in clusters across the region. If the session closest to you doesn't suit, register for any course that fits your schedule. In 2026, all RugbySmart training will be delivered face-to-face.

Once your RugbySmart is complete you'll be accredited for 2026. To become fully ACTIVE you'll also need to provide valid photo ID (such as a NZ Driver Licence or Passport) and complete the Police Vetting process.

Register for your RugbySmart course today and let's get the 2026 season started right.
