Four teams remain undefeated in Waikato club rugby competition

The Waikato Premier Club Rugby competition moved into week 2, with Otorohanga remaining in the top spot early in the season.

Otorohanga, Melville, Hamilton Marist and Hautapu remain as the four undefeated teams in the Premier A club competition.

In contrast to last week with all home teams winning, this week all of the away sides recorded victories.

Fraser Tech 22-51 Otorohanga, at Mill Street

Fraser Tech was home this week to host Otorohanga.

After a close first half between the two sides, Otorohanga would again flex their muscle in the second half to record another dominant victory with openside flanker Sivamiolo Lumelume scoring another brace making it four tries from two games.

For Fraser Tech, Valynce Te Whare had another strong game scoring a superb try leaving tacklers in his wake and lock Shammah-Anthony Solomona would finish the game with a double.

Hamilton Old Boys 19-33 Hautapu, at Fred Jones Park

In a rematch of last year's Waikato Breweries Shield final, reigning champions Hamilton Old Boys faced off against runners up Hautapu at Fred Jones Park.

This time around it would be Hautapu that would get the better of Hamilton Old Boys, as the visitors would outscore the home side four tries to three helping them to a bonus-point win.

Morrinsville Sports 12-40 Hamilton Marist, at Campbell Park

Morrinsville Sports was at Campbell Park for their first home game of the season as they welcomed visitors Hamilton Marist.

Hamilton Marist scored three tries in the first half to lead 19-0 at the break.

In the second half Morrinsville Sports answered back by scoring the first of their two, second half tries but two late scores from Hamilton Marist helped the visitors to the 38 point blowout.

Taupiri 3-27 Melville, at Murphy Lane

Taupiri hosted their first home game of the season at Murphy Lane since returning to the Premier competition, they hosted 2016 premier winner Melville.

Taupiri would score an early penalty for the first points of the game and their season but then Melville would go on to control the remaining part of the first half, scoring three tries to lead 20-3 at the break.

The home team put on a better defensive effort in the second half only allowing one try for the visitors but the damage in the first half that helped Melville remain undefeated.

University 27-40 Te Awamutu Sports, at Waikato University

The upset of the round went to Te Awamutu Sports who recorded a 40-27 win over home team University to finish the clean sweep for visiting sides.

Te Awamutu Sports came to Hamilton looking for their first win of the season and were successful outscoring University six tries to four with halfback Vavao Afemai scoring two tries and young winger Queyst Michael-Tapu also getting on the scoresheet to record his fourth try in two games, to be joint competition top try scorer with Otorohanga's Sivamiolo Lumelume.
