Waikato Rugby is proud to announce the appointments of its premier team coaches for its upcoming season. Following James Semple’s move to the New Zealand Rugby 7s programme, and as a result of a robust and competitive interview process, Waikato Rugby is pleased to announce the appointment of Reuben Samuel as the Waitomo Group Waikato FPC Head coach for 2025.
Reuben brings both international and domestic coaching experience, having previously coached Waikato in the FPC in 2012-2015, Black Ferns Assistant Coach 2015 before heading overseas to lead the Brazilian Women’s Sevens and XVs teams from 2016-2020. Since returning from overseas, Reuben has played a key role in the development of women’s rugby within the Waikato region, contributing significantly to the Waikato women’s player pathway programme.
“I’m excited to be coaching this team that has always held, and will continue to hold, a special place in my heart since being part of its reformation in 2012. Waikato Rugby have been working extremely hard to build and lead the way in girls and women’s pathways not only here in the Waikato but also by contributing to the development of many of our players and former coaches that have gone on to National and International representation. I’m extremely proud to continue contributing to the legacy of Waikato women’s rugby” says Reuben.
Reuben is a passionate advocate for player growth and connection, and his appointment represents a strategic step forward for the women’s game in the Waikato.
Ross Filipo returns to lead the NPC squad after a strong 2024 season. A former All Black, Super Rugby player and current coach of the New Zealand Maaori All Blacks, Ross not only brings a wealth of technical expertise and a drive for success, but also a commitment to building an inclusive, growth-driven environment.
"I'm honoured to re-sign as Head Coach of Waikato Rugby for a fifth season. The continuity we've established over the past four years has been crucial in building a strong and resilient team culture — one that reflects the values of this proud province. I’m particularly proud of the development we’ve seen in our playing group, both on and off the field, and the depth of talent continuing to emerge through our pathways. Our aspirations are clear: to be genuine title contenders and to bring sustained success back to Waikato Rugby.” says Ross.
Ross’ return as Head coach for Waikato provides continuity to a Union with a proud history in the competition. His leadership remains a vital asset as Waikato Rugby aims to challenge for silverware in the Bunnings NPC in 2025.
“I wish to extend my congratulations to both Ross and Reuben on their respective appointments, both of which are hugely exciting for Waikato Rugby. These are coaches with incredibly strong player relationships in their respective spaces, focuses on developing home grown talent and intent to work together, which importantly, aligns with Waikato Rugby’s values. We look forward to having both of them lead our teams in 2025.” says Waikato Rugby Chief Executive Dr. Amy Marfell
These appointments reflect Waikato Rugby’s commitment to fielding a strong and united premier coaching group in 2025. With aligned leadership across both programmes, Waikato Rugby is well-positioned to continue growing the success of its player pathways, high-performance culture, and community connection.
