Waikato sevens team back on top

Waisiki Masirewa played in the last national rugby sevens final Waikato was in 10 years ago.

Yesterday he guided Waikato to their first title in 12 years as head coach, adding the accomplishment to the feat of mentoring Morrinsville Sports to their first Waikato club rugby title last season following the sudden death of head coach Darrin Stevenson before the semifinals.

"Bloody hell. That shield hasn't been to Waikato for a long time," Masirewa said after his team upset favourites Bay of Plenty 21-14 in yesterday's final in Queenstown, thanks to a last-minute 90-metre try by skipper Tim Mikkelson that was converted from wide out by Henry Speight.
