Waikato beats Counties

7th August 2011 04:29PM

Waikato have defeated Counties Manukau 22-15 in a Chiefs derby match that will be referred to by purists as a 'grinding encounter' at a waterlogged Bayer Growers Stadium in Pukekohe.

With the first half being played almost entirely in the rain the match would never reach any real heights.

But it didn't matter to Waikato, who came away with four points to see them rise to fourth in the Premiership while Counties stayed fifth in the Championship.

It was much to the delight of the outgoing Aled de Malmanche, who leaves the rugged red, yellow and black hoops for the flamboyant outfits of Stade Francais in the Top 14 competition in France.
