Waikato Club Players Take on Top Japanese Rep Team in Hamilton Next Month

29th April 2010 04:14PM

A 30-strong Waikato squad, made up of the province's up and coming club rugby players, has been named to play a Japanese representative team at Waikato Stadium in Hamilton next month.

The Japanese representative team is Kanto from East Japan and is made up of players from the country's premier clubs.

The game will be played at 6.00pm on Wednesday 12 May. Entry is free for all Chiefs and Waikato Season Members, with a gold coin donation for the general public. All entry proceeds will go to Waikato Rugby's official charity Pass It On Foundation.

In the first half the Waikato NPC Development team will take the field against Kanto; with the Waikato Under 20s Development team playing Kanto in the second half.

On Thursday 6 May, Waikato-based coaches Nic Holten, Scott McLeod, Leon Holden and Johnny Walters will hold a coaching session with the Kanto team before Kanto plays a New Zealand Universities side at Waikato Stadium on Sunday 9 May (kick off time is 3.00pm).

Footnote: Waikato Rugby has always enjoyed strong rugby links with clubs from the Kanto region. Scott McLeod, Nic Holten, Steven Bates, Scott Couch and David Hill all played for Toshiba, while Greg Smith is currently working in a coaching capacity with Mitsubishi, and Paul Hodder (coach) and Chris Gibbes (player) have been associated with Kaimaishi.
