Waikato 6 - Southland 16

Waikato went down 6 - 16 to Southland tonight in their opening game of the 2009 Air New Zealand Cup competition.
Waikato second five-eighth Callum Bruce was the sole points scorer for the Mooloo Men in Invercargill, slotting two penalties. The first penalty saw Waikato equal with Southland to be 3-all at half-time. However, the Stags played a stronger second half, finishing with a10 point lead over Waikato.
The Waikato team fly back to Hamilton tomorrow (Sunday 2 August). The Mooloo men will then commence training in preparation for their first home game at Waikato Stadium which is against Manawatu next Saturday afternoon.
