Waikato have played Bay of Plenty on 17 occasions in NPC rugby for 11 victories.
Waikato have lost their last three championship games to Bay of Plenty.
These two neighbouring teams did not meet in championship matches in 2006, 2007 and 2008 because of the "managed draw".
These teams have often met in an early season match. It was in such a match in 2006 that Liam Messam scored a record equalling four tries.
For some years now there has been a flow of players both ways between these two teams - this year Zak Hohneck and Matt Vant Leven have arrived from Bay of Plenty to Waikato - and a returning Grant McQuoid to Bay of Plenty had previously played for Waikato.
