6th October 2009 02:04PM
Waikato rugby players and WRU staff took the time recently to bring in clothing and other items to be gifted to victims of the recent Pacific Tsunami.
Waikato captain Liam Messam put out the call to action last week to all players and staff to bring in any unwanted or unused training gear, clothing, shoes and other appropriate items.
Yesterday Major Roger Herring of Hamilton Salvation Army collected up the many bags of items donated by the players and staff. He will ensure the gear is transported to Samoa in the coming weeks.
Waikato players of Samoan heritage Sosene Anesi, Jack Lam and Ole Avei were all present when Liam Messam handed over the collected items to Major Herring..
"The recent Tsunami has affected a lot people and it is close to home for many of our players. The players and WRU staff got behind the initiative and we hope our small gesture will make a difference to the people of Samoa," said Messam.
