Callum Bruce Named Waikato Captain

19th October 2009 03:24PM

Callum Bruce has been named as the new Waikato captain.

With Liam Messam gaining a spot in the All Blacks squad for the end of year tour, Bruce will take over as skipper of the Mooloos from this week.

26-year-old Bruce, an experienced back, has played 25 games for Waikato to date.

Waikato coach Chris Gibbes said: "Callum is a class player with great leadership abilities. The captaincy role is an important one, particularly as our team enters into the business end of our campaign. Callum will step up to the challenge."

Waikato takes on Auckland this Saturday (24 October) night at Waikato Stadium in Hamilton in the final week of the Air New Zealand Cup round robin. Kick off is 7.35pm. Waikato currently sits in fourth spot on 36 points in the Air New Zealand Cup standings table.

Tickets for the Waikato v Auckland match are on sale now through the usual ticket outlets, www.mooloo.co.nz and from Gate One, Waikato Stadium.
